S-curve model

S-curve model, or why it is impossible to grow without challenges.

The S-curve model illustrates our growth journey, divided into three stages:

  1. Launch Point - This is the beginning of your learning journey. You have just started learning, and you may not know a lot of things. At this stage, when everything feels unfamiliar, the support of a mentor becomes crucial. It’s natural to experience frustration and isolation, as mastery doesn’t come overnight. Remember, this is just a phase, and soon, you'll transition to the Sweet Spot.

  2. Sweet Spot - Here, the rules of the game become clear, and you have the essential knowledge to apply in real-life scenarios.  Focus on what truly matters and resist the urge to juggle everything at once. With guidance from your mentor or manager, prioritise and manage your workload effectively to avoid burnout. This stage is about honing your skills while managing your energy wisely. If you navigate this stage well, you will reach the Mastery phase

  3. In a  Mastery phase, you’ll get a deep understanding of the problem, be equipped with all the skills, and know exactly what to do.  You will finally feel confident and capable. However, beware of the boredom that may come from a lack of new challenges. If it happens, this signals the perfect moment to begin on a new loop within the S-curve model.

Thus, it’s clear that challenges are the catalysts that drive us to learn, grow, and evolve as professionals.
